Updated July 14, Research shows older Australians are increasingly giving up sport and exercise, but a group of former rugby players in Adelaide is breaking the mould and proving no-one is ever too old to take to the field. At 75, Frank Ortiz is one of the oldest, but most crucial, players in the Crippled Crows rugby. On a wet and wintery day in Adelaide a group of men and women in their 60s and 70s, have donned their footy boots and guernseys and are lining up opposite each other on the field.
He's running late for the most important part of the match, a pre-game toast of port — to fun, friendship and fraternity. Roughly every fortnight, Mr Ortiz joins odd older rugby players in South Australia for a scratch match. Many are former international and state players who wanted to take up the sport again later in life.
One player joked that it was a bit like returning to an under 8s side: the rules are modified, there are no Australia spa and massage Logan City and losers, and their families come out to watch them play.
He quit the sport professionally, but when he moved to Australia in he felt he was still too young to completely give up the game he loved so. While he admits it is an "average" level of rugby with players of all "different shapes and sizes", he said the team "opened the doors" for him to make friends and settle into Australian life. Mr Oritz plays in purple shorts which means he is not allowed to be tackled to the ground. Others wear red shorts if they have a serious injury or yellow shorts if they cannot be tackled at all.
At 60, Sue Stewart donned the red shorts and decided she wanted to join the team as the first Friends of Adelaide seniors player.
